Why is it Special?

What makes DeMorgenzon special is its “Musical Terroir.” Beyond the Baroque influence, the weathered granite soils provide a Natural Exuberance and high acidity that keeps the wine fresh and “bright” even in warmer vintages. It is “Special” because it captures the “Floral Side” of Syrah—shifting the focus from heavy dark fruit toward a bouquet of lavender, violets, and white pepper. It is a “Connoisseur’s Darling,” frequently cited by critics for its precision and its ability to bridge the gap between Northern Rhône elegance and South African fruit intensity.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A rich and highly aromatic bouquet. Expect an immediate burst of ripe red plums and berries, followed by sophisticated layers of white pepper, violets, and lavender.

Palate: Full-bodied yet remarkably fresh. The palate is a lush tapestry of dark fruit and berry preserves, supported by developing spices of cinnamon, clove, and vanilla. There is a beautiful “supple” roundness to the tannins.

Finish: A long, well-balanced finish that echoes with savoury spice and a final, aristocratic whisper of toasty French oak.

Product details

The DeMorgenzon Syrah (available in both the premium Reserve and the accessible DMZ tiers) is a celebration of “Morning Light” viticulture. Sourced from south- and east-facing slopes that are the first to see the sun, these vineyards benefit from cool Atlantic breezes that preserve the grape’s delicate aromatics. The winemaking often includes a small percentage of whole-bunch fermentation, adding a “peppery” structural complexity. Matured in French oak (including large 3,000-litre Foudres), it is a medium-to-full-bodied red characterised by its deep purple core and its incredible “youthful vigour.”

Food Pairing

DeMorgenzon Syrah is a vibrant, high-energy wine that demands food with a similar "personality." It is the ultimate companion for Grilled Lamb with Herbs de Provence or Slow-Roasted Beef Brisket with a smoky rub. Its floral and peppery nuances make it a spectacular match for Springbok Medallions or a Rich Lentil and Mushroom Ragù. For a casual yet refined pairing, try it with a charcuterie platter featuring spicy salami and olives. It is "Special" when served alongside Hard Cheeses like Matured Cheddar or Manchego, which highlight the wine's spicy finish.
