WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

What sets Weltevrede CherryChoc Merlot apart is its unusually expressive flavour profile — ripe cherry and bittersweet chocolate — combined with a robust structure that gives the wine real presence, not just a sweet or dessert-style Merlot. It delivers remarkable value, often found around the R110–120 mark, making it an excellent choice for both casual drinkers and collectors seeking an everyday, flavourful Merlot with depth and personality.

Palate: A chunky mid-palate packed with intense flavours of cherry and plum, bitter espresso, and dark cocoa — giving the wine both fruit intensity and depth.

Finish: A dry and lingering finish, with notes of black pepper, dark chocolate, and a pleasantly espresso-tinged bitterness.

Product details

Weltevrede CherryChoc Merlot is crafted by the Weltevrede wine estate in the Western Cape (Cape Wine Crafters), offering a bold yet approachable expression of Merlot. Bottled at around 13.5% ABV, this wine presents a deep red colour and is vinified in stainless steel, then gently handled to preserve its fruit-forward characteristics. Its name reflects the wine’s signature flavour profile: rich cherry fruit layered with soft chocolate nuances.

Food Pairing

This Merlot is a superb match for grilled steak or braai meats, particularly cuts with smoky or charred notes that complement its cherry and espresso undertones. It also pairs beautifully with pork tenderloin glazed in cherry-compote, and its richness works well with dark chocolate-dusted desserts. For something more savory, try it with mushroom pasta or smoked chicken, both of which highlight its dark fruit and dry-black-pepper finish.
