Why is it Special?

What makes Tokara Shiraz special is its “Vertical Elegance.” Because the vineyards are so high up the mountain, the wine possesses a “Linear Freshness” and a vibrant energy that is rare in Shiraz. It is “Special” because it offers High-Altitude Precision—it gives you the white pepper and lavender notes of a Northern Rhône Syrah but with the generous fruit core of the Cape. It is the go-to bottle for the connoisseur who values “light and shade” in their wine, proving that Shiraz can be as graceful as it is powerful.

Tasting Notes

Nose: An elegant and perfumed bouquet. Expect immediate notes of ripe mulberries and blueberries, followed by sophisticated layers of violets, cracked black pepper, and a delicate aniseed spice.

Palate: Medium-bodied, sleek, and incredibly balanced. The palate is a refined tapestry of dark fruit and cherries, supported by fine-grained, silky tannins. There is a distinct stony minerality and a refreshing, linear acidity.

Finish: A long, clean, and savoury finish. It leaves a lingering trail of baking spices, savoury herbs, and a final, cool mountain whisper of toasty oak.

Product details

The Tokara Shiraz is a sophisticated, estate-grown red that captures the cool-climate essence of the Simonsberg-Stellenbosch slopes. Grown in decomposed granite soils at altitudes of up to 550 meters, the grapes experience a slower ripening process, preserving their natural acidity and delicate spice. Matured for 10 to 12 months in older French oak barrels, this wine is a medium-to-full-bodied masterpiece that eschews heavy, “jammy” extraction in favour of perfumed elegance. It is celebrated for its silky texture and a distinct “shale-like” minerality that sets it apart from more traditional, sun-baked South African Syrahs.

Food Pairing

Tokara Shiraz is a refined "gastronomy wine" that excels when paired with sophisticated, modern cuisine. It is the ultimate companion for Seared Duck Breast with a Plum Glaze or a Rack of Lamb served with a rosemary and red-wine reduction. Its peppery, floral lift makes it a spectacular match for Springbok Carpaccio or a Wild Mushroom Risotto topped with shaved truffle. For a casual yet high-end pairing, try it with a Wood-fired Pizza topped with Beef Bresaola and Rocket. It is "Special" when served alongside Aged Gruyère, where the wine’s fruit purity balances the nutty saltiness of the cheese.
