WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

What makes Zonnebloem Merlot especially attractive for collectors is its maritime-cooled Stellenbosch provenance, which preserves purity of fruit and vibrant aromatics, combined with thoughtful oak maturation that adds complexity without overwhelming. This balance of elegance, structure, and fruit density gives the wine both immediate drinkability and modest ageing potential, making it a smart pick for both new and seasoned Merlot enthusiasts.

Product details

Zonnebloem Merlot is made from grapes sourced in trellised, dryland vineyards in Devon Valley, Stellenbosch Kloof and Jonkershoek, locations that benefit from cooling maritime breezes to promote slow, even ripening.  The winemaking process includes a 10–12 day skin fermentation around 27°C, followed by malolactic conversion, and about 12 months of maturation in a mix of oak and stainless steel (roughly 80% French and 20% American oak).

Food Pairing

This Merlot pairs beautifully with rich oxtail stews or slow-braised red meats, where its ripe red-berry fruit and oak spice complement deeply savoury flavours. It also works very well with game dishes or gamey poultry, enhancing the wine’s earthy and fruit-driven character. For a slightly lighter match, try it with spiced chicken curry, or enjoy with mature cheeses like aged Gouda or Camembert to bring out the plush texture and warming oak.
