Why is it Special?

What makes Rust en Vrede Shiraz special is its “Uncompromising Pedigree.” It is one of the few South African wines to have been consistently featured in the Wine Spectator Top 100. It is “Special” because it captures the “Helderberg Savoury Note”—a unique combination of floral violets and iron-like minerality that prevents the high-intensity fruit from feeling “jammy.” It is a wine built for the long haul, evolving from a vibrant fruit powerhouse into a complex, leathery masterpiece over 10 to 15 years.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A profound and brooding bouquet. Expect intense aromas of ripe blackberries and blueberries, followed by sophisticated layers of violets, cracked black pepper, and a hint of savoury cured meat.

Palate: Full-bodied, concentrated, and richly textured. The palate is a dense tapestry of dark chocolate, liquorice, and bramble fruit, supported by powerful yet velvety tannins. There is a magnificent core of toasty oak and cedarwood.

Finish: Exceptionally long, dry, and commanding. It leaves a lingering trail of baking spices, espresso beans, and a final, aristocratic whisper of stony minerality.

Product details

The Rust en Vrede Shiraz is a powerful, estate-grown masterpiece from the golden slopes of the Helderberg in Stellenbosch. Benefitting from a warmer microclimate and iron-rich red clay soils, this wine is a deep, opaque purple in the glass. It is matured for 18 months in 100% French oak (a mix of new and seasoned barrels) to refine its muscular tannins. This is a “Grand Style” Shiraz—bold, concentrated, and unapologetically intense, yet balanced by a savoury, earthy backbone that is the hallmark of the Rust en Vrede terroir.

Food Pairing

A wine of this magnitude requires a culinary partner with equal weight and character. It is the ultimate companion for Char-Grilled Ribeye served with a wild mushroom sauce or Slow-Braised Venison Shank in a red wine reduction. Its spicy, floral undertones make it a spectacular match for Pepper-Crusted Ostrich Fillet or Roasted Lamb seasoned with rosemary and garlic. For a vegetarian option, try a Smoky Aubergine and Lentil Moussaka. It is "Special" when paired with Aged Hard Cheeses or 70% Dark Chocolate, which echoes the wine's natural cocoa notes.
