Why is it Special?

What makes Allesverloren Shiraz special is its “Rugged Pedigree.” The estate has been in the Malan family since 1872, and their intimate knowledge of the Swartland sun is evident in every bottle. It is “Special” because it offers a “Sense of Place”—it captures the dusty, savoury, and leathery notes of the Kasteelberg slopes that few other wines can replicate. It is a “Connoisseur’s Classic,” known for its incredible ageing potential, often becoming more graceful and truffle-scented after a decade in the cellar.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A profound and brooding bouquet. Expect intense aromas of ripe plums and blackcurrants, followed by sophisticated layers of cracked black pepper, cigar box, and a distinct savory, earthy smokiness.

Palate: Full-bodied, concentrated, and remarkably smooth. The palate is a dense tapestry of blackberry jam and mulberry, supported by firm, integrated tannins. There is a magnificent core of toasty oak and baking spices.

Finish: Exceptionally long and commanding. It leaves a lingering trail of dark chocolate, leather, and a final, aristocratic whisper of stony mineral tension.

Product details

The Allesverloren Shiraz is a monumental, estate-grown red that captures the intense spirit of the Swartland. Grown on the steep, stony slopes of the Kasteelberg, the vines struggle through shale and decomposed schist, resulting in small, highly concentrated berries. Matured for 15 months in a combination of new and second-fill French oak, it is a full-bodied powerhouse that strikes a sophisticated balance between ripe dark fruit and the earthy, savoury minerals that define the region. It is a wine of immense structure and “old-school” gravitas.

Food Pairing

This is a wine built for fire and smoke. It is the ultimate companion for Char-Grilled Game Steaks (like Kudu or Eland) or a Slow-Braised Beef Short Rib in a rich balsamic reduction. Its spicy, savoury profile makes it a spectacular match for Traditional South African Braaiwors, particularly pepper-crusted sirloin or spicy lamb sausages. For a vegetarian option, try a Smoky Lentil and Aubergine Stew. It is "Special" when paired with Aged Hard Cheeses or a plate of Smoked Meats and Biltong, which echoes the wine's natural smoky character.
