WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

What makes the Durbanville Hills “Lighthouse” Merlot uniquely appealing is its blend of sea-influenced terroir and artistic inspiration, channelled through the cool Durbanville climate and the iconic Cape Town lighthouse label. This wine is not only visually collectable, but also carefully crafted to express mint-chocolate and red cherry notes, paired with a poised structure. It represents a refined, coastal Merlot that offers both early charm and the capacity to age gracefully.

Product details

Durbanville Hills Collectors Reserve The Lighthouse Merlot is part of the winery’s premium “Collectors Reserve” range, inspired by the iconic Cape Town lighthouse ‒ “Moaning Minnie” — perched on Green Point. The grapes come from cool-climate Durbanville vineyards where sea mists and gentle maritime breezes shape the variety. This Merlot is matured for about 14 months (per Makro listing) to develop both concentration and finesse.

Food Pairing

This refined Merlot is a stellar match for roast lamb neck or lamb roast with Italian herbs, where its red cherry and mint-chocolate nuances elevate the herbal richness of the meat. It also pairs elegantly with mushroom-based dishes, like mushroom risotto or sautéed wild mushrooms, which accentuate its soft fruit and subtle spice. For a heartier dinner, try it with herb-roasted pork shoulder, or enjoy it alongside semi-mature cheeses such as Gouda or Comté to highlight its smooth structure and lingering finish.
