VAN LOVEREN AFRICAN JAVA PINOTAGE

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

What makes African Java special is its Indulgent Profile. While many Pinotages strive for austerity, Van Loveren leans into the “Java” name, creating a wine that smells like a Parisian cafe. It is special because it offers an “Off-Dry” elegance—the residual sugar is just high enough to make it incredibly smooth on the palate without losing its red-wine soul.

TASTING NOTES:

Nose: An immediate and seductive aromatic profile. The “Java” is front and centre with intense roasted coffee beans, followed by dark chocolate and a hint of smoky toast.

Palate: Vibrant and soft. A lush core of blackberry and mulberry fruit provides a sweet, juicy foundation. The mouthfeel is famously smooth with velvety tannins that make it incredibly easy to drink.

Finish: A rich and lingering aftertaste of smoky mocha and a touch of sweet vanilla spice.

Product details

The Van Loveren African Java Pinotage is a distinctive, oak-matured red that celebrates the bold, innovative spirit of the Robertson Valley. By fermenting the juice on specially selected oak staves, the winemakers emphasize the varietal’s natural ability to produce rich, roasted aromas. This is a soft, medium-bodied wine that prioritizes fruit sweetness and aromatic intensity over heavy tannins. It is a “modernist” Pinotage—approachable, seductive, and famously consistent—making it a favorite for those who enjoy a wine with a clear, decadent personality.

Food Pairing

The African Java is a versatile "all-rounder" that shines when paired with rich, savory-sweet flavors. It is a natural companion for Smoky BBQ Spare Ribs or a slow-cooked Osso Bucco where the wine’s mocha notes complement the marrow and meat. Its hint of sweetness makes it one of the few reds that can stand up to a Mildly Spiced Curry or a Venison Stew with dried fruits. For a truly "special" experience, serve it alongside Dark Chocolate Fondue or Blue Cheese and Fig Preserve—the wine acts as a bridge between the savory and the sweet.
