WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

De Krans Cape Ruby stands out for its balance of fruit-forward intensity and structure. While many fortified wines lean heavily into sweetness, this Ruby is elegantly crafted to maintain vibrant fruit character—thanks to Calitzdorp’s warm climate and old Portuguese varietals—and enough oak ageing to add complexity without overshadowing the wine’s liveliness.

Product details

De Krans Cape Ruby Port is a classic, non-vintage “Cape Ruby” style fortified wine produced in Calitzdorp by De Krans Wines, a highly regarded name in South African port-style wines. It’s made from traditional Portuguese varieties, including Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barocca, Tinta Amarela, and Souzao, which thrive in De Krans’s Klein Karoo terroir. The wine is matured for between six months and three years in oak, developing richness while retaining its youthful fruit intensity.

For collectors: It offers a highly drinkable style that can be enjoyed now or used in creative culinary or cocktail contexts.

Food Pairing

This Ruby Port pairs beautifully with rich chocolate desserts, dark chocolate pralines, or cherry‑berry tarts—its bright fruit and spice notes elevate sweet dishes without overwhelming them. It also works as an accompaniment to soft and aged cheeses, especially blue cheese or mature cheddar, bringing out the port’s plush texture. Plus, De Krans themselves suggest using it in hearty stews and potjies, or even adding it to rustic pastas or soups for an extra layer of sweetness and dimension.
