WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

Meerlust Merlot stands out because of its heritage vineyards and coastal Stellenbosch terroir, which lend it both power and elegance. The long barrel maturation in fine Nevers oak, combined with the softening influence of Cabernet Franc and a hint of Petit Verdot, gives the wine complexity, age‑worthiness, and a polished, refined profile — making it a favorite among collectors who want a Merlot that rewards patience without sacrificing approachability.

TASTING NOTES:

Nose: Rich aromas of dark brambly fruit — think mulberry and damson plum — layered with liquorice, a touch of dried herb, and gentle oak spice.

Palate: Medium‑full body featuring generous, ripe Merlot fruit balanced by refreshing acidity, silky tannins, and a core of richness that combines opulence with finesse.

Finish: Long, mineral-tinged, and lingering; the finish echoes the dark fruit, with a refined, almost stony texture and subtle savory spice.

Product details

Meerlust Merlot is sourced from more than 26‑year‑old Merlot vineyard parcels on the historic Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch, an estate with a long family heritage and maritime influence. After harvest, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in 300 L French oak hogsheads and then matures for around 17 months in new and second-fill Nevers French oak barrels. Components of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot are added to lend structural lift, acidity, and softness to this Merlot.

Food Pairing

Meerlust Merlot pairs beautifully with roasted lamb shoulder or braised beef cheeks, where its rich plum and black fruit core complements the meat’s depth. It also works harmoniously with mushroom risotto or wild mushroom pasta, which echo its earthy, herbal notes. For cheese lovers, pair it with aged Gouda or blue cheese to highlight its plush texture and smooth tannin structure.
