TASTING NOTES:

Nose:  The bouquet is captivating and complex, revealing layers of black cherry, plum, and dried rose, with undertones of liquorice, tar, graphite, and truffle. Subtle notes of cedar, balsamic spice, and tobacco add to its aromatic grandeur and depth.

Palate:  The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, yet impeccably balanced. Flavours of ripe red fruit, dark chocolate, and earthy mineral tones unfold alongside leather, espresso, and herbs, supported by silky tannins and a lively core of acidity. The wine’s power is matched by its elegance, offering a profound and seamless sensory experience.

Finish:  The finish is endlessly long and refined, echoing notes of dried cherry, truffle, and fine spice, leaving a graceful impression that lingers long after the last sip — the hallmark of a truly great Gaja vintage.

Product details

The story of the Gaja Winery can be traced to a singular, founding purpose: to produce original wines with a sense of place which reflect the tradition and culture of those who made it. This philosophy has inspired five generations of impeccable winemaking. It started over 150 years ago when Giovanni Gaja opened a small restaurant in Barbaresco, making wine to complement the food he served. In 1859, he founded the Gaja Winery, producing some of the first wine from Piedmont to be bottled and sold outside the region. Ever since, the winery has been shaped by each generation’s hand, notably that of Angelo Gaja. Under Angelo’s direction, the native Nebbiolo grape was elevated to world-class esteem.

Today, Angelo Gaja, alongside Guido Rivella, his winemaker since 1970, and his daughter, Gaia, advance their legacy. To fully realise their vision, all Gaja wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown in estate-owned vineyards, including 250 acres in Piedmont’s Barbaresco and Barolo districts as well as estates in Pieve Santa Restituta (Montalcino) and Ca’Marcanda (Bolgheri). It is from these storied vineyards, and the earth, weather and vines upon them, that Gaja wines reveal their true heart.

The Gaja Sorì San Lorenzo 2000 is one of Angelo Gaja’s most iconic single-vineyard Barbaresco bottlings, crafted predominantly from Nebbiolo grown on the revered Sorì San Lorenzo vineyard, first planted in 1964. Situated in Barbaresco’s finest hillside exposures, this wine is known for its immense power, structure, and depth — a benchmark of Gaja’s visionary approach to Piedmontese winemaking.

For Collectors: A magnificent and long-lived expression of Nebbiolo, cellar-worthy through 2050+, the 2000 Sorì San Lorenzo remains a crown jewel of Gaja’s portfolio, prized for its power, balance, and historical significance. A true investment-grade Italian icon.
