WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

While 1998 did not enjoy the textbook “top vintage” conditions, this Opus One stands out for its exceptional balance, precise fruit purity and ageing potential. Many collectors regard it as an underrated vintage that has matured gracefully and now rewards patience.

TASTING NOTES:

Nose: The bouquet opens with aromas of blackberry, youngberry and ripe blackcurrant, layered with hints of cocoa, almond, cedar and subtle vanilla oak spice. Additional notes of dark chocolate, black cherries, currants and berry core are often cited.

Palate: Full‑bodied in style yet balanced, the palate reveals rich dark fruit (black cherry, blackcurrant) complemented by cedarwood, pencil shavings, dark chocolate and soft tobacco/leather tones. Tannins are present but softened, the acidity keeps the structure lively, and the wine maintains a good sense of regional freshness.

Finish: The finish is smooth, lingering and satisfying — dark fruit flavours fade into cocoa, cedar, soft graphite minerality and gentle oak spice, leaving a clean aftertaste and a wine built for near‑term drinking or short‑term cellaring.

Product details

The Lanzerac Cabernet Sauvignon is produced by historic Lanzerac Wine Estate in the Jonkershoek Valley of Stellenbosch — an estate dating back to 1692 and one of the Cape’s oldest wine farms. Sourced from well‑exposed vineyards on the western foothills of the Jonkershoek, this wine shows varietal purity, regional character and accessible cellar‑worthiness.

For Collectors: While not in the ultra‑premium tier, this Lanzerac Cabernet is worthy of a place in a well‑rounded cellar. Depending on vintage and storage conditions, it offers a drink window of now through about 8–10 years for best enjoyment. Older vintages may develop more complexity with further cellaring — a smart pick for those exploring premium South African Cabernet‑Sauvignon at a moderate price point.

Food Pairing

Pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as grilled rib‑eye steak, roast leg of lamb, venison medallions, or mature hard cheeses like Parmigiano‑Reggiano or aged Gouda. The wine’s fullness and depth suit rich meat‑based fare, but its balance also works with hearty vegetarian options or mushroom‑rich cuisine.
