CEDERBERG CABERNET SAUVIGNON

WHY IS IT SPECIAL?

Thanks to the vineyard’s high-altitude, cool continental climate, the grapes enjoy a long ripening period, which helps preserve purity, freshness, and concentration — resulting in a Cabernet that is refined, structured, and elegant rather than blockbuster. The Nieuwoudt family (fifth generation) manages the estate with a deep commitment to sustainability and conservation, maintaining a virus-free, bio-diverse environment.

  • Platter’s SA Wine Guide: 4.5 Stars

TASTING NOTES:

Nose: The wine shows classic blackcurrant and dark plum fruits, layered with cedar-wood undertones, tobacco leaf, and a hint of smokiness — evoking both fruit purity and high-altitude finesse.

Palate: Full-bodied yet poised, the palate reveals flavours of cassis, damson plum, and black cherry, balanced by firm but silky tannins. The oak ageing contributes soft notes of vanilla and cedar, while the mountain-grown fruit adds mineral salinity and elegance.

Finish: The finish is long and velvety, with lingering dark fruit, a whisper of tobacco, and a clean, mineral-driven finish that underscores its mountain terroir.

Product details

Cederberg Cabernet Sauvignon. Cederberg Private Cellar sits at an altitude of over 1,000 m above sea level, making it one of the highest vineyards in South Africa. The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown on well-drained red slate and Hutton soils, hand-harvested, then cold-soaked for two days before fermenting. After fermentation, the wine undergoes extended skin maceration of 14–18 days before being matured for 18 months in French oak barrels (83% first-fill).

For Collectors: While not hyper-premium, this Cabernet is absolutely cellar-worthy. Because of its structure and oak maturation, it can confidently age for 5–10 years or more, with top vintages (like the Five Generations series) showing excellent long-term potential.
